Department Summary
The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism is an ACEJMC-accredited school with the only professionally accredited journalism master’s program in the four-state region of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arkansas. The school is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, in one of the largest media markets in the country. We offer journalism classes in public relations, advertising, print/digital, broadcast/digital, and photojournalism. The Mayborn enrolls approximately 1,000 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students. Graduates have won many national and international awards, including Pulitzer Prizes. The school offers students multi-platform professional opportunities including the award-winning North Texas Daily student newspaper, Denton Public Access TV, and student-run photography and ad/PR agencies. The school also hosts the annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, the nationally acclaimed conference for aspiring and experienced writers, journalists and authors.

Position Overview

This position serves as a full time academic advisor for the Mayborn School of Journalism. Advisors will work to promote student success, progression, and timely graduation. They also keep student records up to date, present at informational workshops for students, and assist with events such as Preview Day and Commencement.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: * Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, or similar field AND at least one year of experience directly working with students in a leadership or advisory capacity. * Awareness or background in Journalism or Mass Media Careers. * Familiarity with TCCNS courses and transfer credit articulation.

Work Schedule
M-F, 8a-5p and some nights or weekends required for special advising events and orientations.

Job Duties

o

Welcomes new students to the University and creates a pleasant environment. Assists in delivering presentations, evaluating transfer work and advising students on course selections/campus resources.


o

Prepares, updates and checks degree audits for accuracy. Confers with supervisor and department chairs regarding course substitutions/memos. Reviews degree programs in DARwin for accuracy of requirements listed.


o

Advises students regarding class schedules. University resources and community support opportunities. Linksclassroom to internship/career goals. Completes required University paperwork, such as graduation applications and concurrent enrollment forms.


o

Assists in recruitment activities and events as needed. Supports the retention strategies for both the Mayborn School of Journalism and the University of North Texas. Monitors data for both prospective and admitted students. Manages external communications to these cohorts.


o

Assists with evenst such as Commencement, Preview Day and Celebrate Mayborn.


o

Assists supervisor with key initiatives, such as Transfer student recruitment, retention, and advising intiatives. Critical review of data as indicators for student success is also required.


o

Applies intermediate skills that require in-depth knowledge of function/specialization.
