AmeriCorps Food Access Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY

In the first couple months of placement, the AmeriCorps member will dive into food bank operations, learning everything from grocery rescue to surveying and evaluation. The AmeriCorps will work alongside our Mobile Food Pantry Coordinator, Warehouse Coordinators and Food Bank Manager to run the day-to-day operations of the food bank and ensure that the needs of our food bank participants are met in a welcoming, safe, and respectful manner. After gaining a foundation in food bank operations, the AmeriCorps member will primarily support our Food Bank Express programs, coordinating grocery delivery and Mobile Pantry visits for over 500 households in North Seattle.

This is an AmeriCorps position sponsored by United Way of King County. Commonly known as the
“domestic Peace Corps,” AmeriCorps is a national service program that involves more than 80,000
Americans each year who work to improve community needs. AmeriCorps members obtain job experience and special training, as well as a modest living allowance, medical benefits, up to $400 a month for childcare, postponement, or forbearance on student loans, and an “end of service award” to pay for a range of educational expenses.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate an efficient and quality food distribution at both our Wallingford location and through our mobile pantry sites
  • Assist in supervising and delegating volunteer tasks
  • Receive and record deliveries, rotate stock and monitor inventory levels
  • Process incoming pallets; unpack, sort and store product
  • Assist with food sourcing to meet various dietary needs and expand our culturally specific food choices
  • Complete grocery rescue and other local pick-ups when needed
  • Assist with data entry and monthly reports
  • Attend staff meetings, conferences and other meetings as required.
  • Respond to special circumstances presented by client/volunteers (walk-ins, special needs, referrals, conflicts, etc.)
  • Maintain a clean, orderly facility that meets or exceeds sanitary and safety guidelines/regulations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Satisfactory Driving record with no moving violations in past three years
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Will need to obtain a WA Food Worker card within four weeks after hire date. Certification fee will be paid by FamilyWorks
  • Willingness to proactively seek supervisory input, resources and information needed to accomplish job
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to interact well with individuals of diverse socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrates an understanding of issues related to food justice, hunger, and poverty
  • Passion for the FamilyWorks’ mission
  • Represents FamilyWorks with professionalism, dignity and respect when interacting with customers, staff, volunteers and the community

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and 3 years safe driving history required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Workplace is a warehouse-like setting, working extended periods on a cement floor
  • Involves significant physical exertion on an everyday basis, including heavy lifting (50 lbs or more)
  • Requires driving a van for local pick-ups and deliveries
  • A dynamic and fluid work environment requiring flexible thinking and decision making
  • This position does not qualify for work from home

  • Bi-weekly stipend of $1222.37 (pre-tax)
  • 36-week service term
  • $250 monthly housing sfipend
  • $4,826.50 Educafion Award upon successful complefion of service
  • Addifional $750 complefion bonus upon successful complefion of service
  • Loan deferment and payment of interest accrued during service year on qualified student loans (loans must be federally-backed; personal/private loans not eligible)
