Job Summary


Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (UL) is seeking a staff Archivist to join the Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives unit. Reporting to the Director of Special Collections, this individual manages and organizes archival collections, and assists and advises scholars, administrators, students, and the public in the use of collections, and creates metadata for digital collections.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Makes the archival collections useful to a wide variety of researchers by selecting historically valuable material and organizing collections so that records of high historical and informational value are preserved and easily accessible.
  • Provides reference services that identifies the interests of researchers and retrieves collections relevant to their needs.
  • Appraises records regardless of format (e.g. paper, digital, audio, video) to judge the historical and informational value and to determine what should be kept and what can be discarded in order to create collections of high research value.

General Responsibilities

  • Arranges, describes, and catalogs archival and manuscript collections in all formats. Prepares finding aids, guides, and other descriptive access tools, including the creation of encoded finding aids. Assures appropriate physical housing and storage of collections; identifies items for preservation.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of strategies and programs for processing and making available collections in all formats.
  • Provides research and reference assistance to users of the archive on-site and responds to queries by phone and email. Participates in conducting tours, workshops, and presentations on its collections. Participates in developing and providing support for public programming and outreach activities.
  • Maintains and develops knowledge of current developments in archival processing, metadata standards, and preservation. Serves on committees and working groups as appropriate.
  • Participates in the selection, training, and supervision of graduate assistants, student hourly employees, and volunteers. Provides process improvement suggestions.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

  • Master's degree in library and information science (or related field such as history, archival or museum studies, political science, or public administration)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • 2 years of experience in an archives, museum, or library setting

  • Knowledge of the methods and materials used to create archival and non-print materials by physical, photographic, and digital processes
  • Ability to do research using both primary and secondary sources
  • Experience with the management and preservation of digital assets

Working Conditions / Demands


This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary


Minimum compensation is $40,000 annually. This is not a faculty position. This position is considered exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and in accordance with university policies, will not earn compensatory time for hours worked over standard 40-hour work week.

Work Hours


This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position.
