Job Description
Basic Purpose
Department of Public Safety Oklahoma Highway Patrol Chaplain is involved in providing emotional, moral, religious and spiritual guidance and support to OHP troopers, DPS staff, and their families. This position will work with the First Responder Wellness Division to provide counseling and referrals to mental health services or external faith leaders for troopers and staff in need of help and confidentiality, facilitate partnerships between the department and community stakeholders, perform religious ceremonies, hold services, and participate in the planning of special programs and activities.
Typical Functions
- Counsel troopers and other agency personnel and their families during traumatic or stressful events.
- Visits troopers and other DPS staff when hurt in the line of duty, injured or seriously ill.
- Conduct home visits and hospital visits to agency personnel.
- Correspond with relatives and other interested persons regarding the welfare of OHP and DPS staff.
- Plan special religious programs and activities.
- Assist in delivering death notifications to trooper families, the public, and members of the department.
- Serve as a resource in the event of death for agency administration, families of fallen officers, sworn and civilian personnel, and families of victims of fatal accidents
- Represent the agency in funerals, memorial services, and other religious and civic ceremonies.
- Provide assistance and training in stress management, family life, preparing for retirement, and related areas as it relates to spiritual and religious needs and holistic wellness.
- Interact with other law enforcement officer assistance programs and serve as liaison with local faith-based organizations to help foster community-law enforcement engagement.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Must have five (5) years professional experience as a pastor, chaplain, or ordained minister and an endorsement from the individual’s respective faith.
## NOTE: No substitution will be allowed for the endorsement from the faith.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of various faiths, religious doctrines, principles and practices of the faith practiced, and of religious counseling, theory and practice. Ability is required to conduct religious services and rites; to develop the moral and spiritual life of troopers, and other commissioned and noncommissioned personnel; to provide religious guidance and counseling; to devise and instruct religious education programs; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to organize a program of religious service and education; and to organize the work of others.
