About LSAMP at Binghamton University:
The Binghamton University Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (SUNY LSAMP) program, works with historically underrepresented students in the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science and Harpur College of Arts and Sciences who have indicated an interest in majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program provides a foundation for assisting students with the transition to collegiate academic life and access to an educational community of scholars dedicated to academic, personal, and professional development. The goal is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities (African-American, Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native, Hawaiian Native, and Native Pacific Islander) who pursue STEM careers. The SUNY LSAMP program is not funded to support, and consequently will not support, students declaring majors in pre-medicine, nursing, or allied health sciences. The Project Assistant serves as an administrator, student advisor, and instructor.

Job Description:

The LSAMP Project Coordinator works within the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion/Campus Director for the LSAMP Program, the LSAMP Project Coordinator will coordinate, oversee, and/or performs a wide variety of administrative support activities to ensure that the LSAMP program is meeting program goals.

Duties of the LSAMP Project Coordinator:

  • Assist with student recruitment efforts.
  • Assist with the collection and evaluation of data on program participants and program performance, including maintaining information on student needs and progress.
  • Assist in compiling SUNY LSAMP Performance Reports.
  • Plans all program functions including summer and academic year research programs, workshops on various topics as needed, academic and career advising sessions with individual students, teaches students how to construct effective PowerPoint and poster presentations, helps students prepare for conference presentations, accompanies students to research conferences and on group visits to graduate schools, overnight trips (one to three nights per trip), helps students rehearse oral presentations, and assists students in the graduate school application process.
  • The approximate allocation of time is 35% Administration, 45% Mentoring/Advising, and 20% Instruction/Teaching.

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (or related field) and at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Strong skills in cultural humility, diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
  • Licensed to drive a vehicle in NYS.
  • Significant experience advising or teaching students from groups underrepresented in graduate education
  • He/she/they must be self-motivated and able to exercise independent judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Database management skills.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events.
  • Knowledge of academic administrative principles and procedures.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree (i.e., STEM field, Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education, Public Relations, Business Administration, Public Administration, or similar)
  • Administrative experience, ideally in externally funded grant program administration and reporting;
  • Teaching experience at the college level in science, technology, engineering, or math.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a higher education setting, preferably in a DEI development capacity
