The Plant Safety (HSE) Manager position is a full-time, direct-hire position working for a wood products client in South of the Tuscaloosa, AL. area.

Plant Safety (HSE) Manager Position Overview:
The individual will provide overall Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) management at designated locations on safety issues, as well as being expected to contribute at the facility level in order to identify priorities and recommend solutions to support the business and overall safety objectives. This position reports to the Director and responsible for overall management of safety matters at designated location.

Plant Safety Manager Essential Job Duties:
• Foster a “Safety First” culture.
  • Support and implement the company safety culture, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversees risk assessment and risk mitigation measures on-site and before commencement of projects.
  • Undertakes corrective and preventive measures to ensure a proper environment and health for the organization’s sites.
  • Creates proposals for corrective or preventive measures, and investigates, analyzes and regularly reviews accidents or near misses within the organization.
  • Through strong leadership and example, ensure that the company’s Safety policies are met at site level.
  • Ensures that work safety permits are enforced as necessary at all sites.
  • Ensures employees are properly informed about the working, environmental and safety policies of the organization.
  • Encourage teamwork at all levels of the organization, particularly across functions and empower individuals to make a contribution.
  • Foster an environment of data driven continuous improvement for all aspects of the departments.
  • Engage all department employees in safety issues and set high personal standards through a highly visible, hands-on management style.
  • Through written policy and procedures ensure that regular emergency response is effective and that managers and employees are prepared at all times.
  • Working with Director, designs and conducts drills, both announced and unannounced at all company locations.
  • Manage key external interfaces including prime responsibility for OSHA, consultants, legislation and where appropriate local community representatives.
  • Maintain safety statistics and create reports that reflect the performance of the site to relevant parties such as, upper management.
  • Responsible for the implementation of DBI Safety policy and safety documentation at designated location.
  • In concert with Director, responsible for driving continuous improvements in safety performance across designated location.
  • Assists in the development of DBI management systems.
  • Responsible for site implementation of the safety team.
  • Provide leadership for providing safety advice to DBI management and employees.
  • Coordinates with operations, engineering & maintenance departments interface with HR concerning Health policy development and implementation.
  • Responsible for adherence to budgeted financial management/controls of all safety activities.

Plant Safety (HSE) Manager Qualifications:
• A Bachelor’s degree in fields such as safety/environmental sciences, occupational health and safety management, environmental health, environmental engineering or public health is preferred.
  • 5+ years of practical work experience in a safety role, with one to two years’ experience in operations, maintenance and/or engineering.
  • Previous Wood Products plant experience desired.
  • Safety Managers with ties to the area or work experience in the Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama areas are preferred.
  • Safety degree or certifications preferred.
  • Understands the nature and causes of accidents, alert and attentive for possible hazards, takes necessary actions to prevent accidents.
  • A credible strong leader with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong team working ethic .
  • Ability to mentor, coach, encourage, hold people accountable and set high standards in all aspects of the department’s work.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to apply sound business and commercial knowledge in the production arena.
  • Certification by OSHA is a plus.
  • Candidate must be able to commute to the South Tuscaloosa AL. area, or be willing to relocate.
