Job Description
The Protection Services Officer I (PSO I) is a member of the Protection Services team, which performs a critical role by protecting the safety of visitors, staff and Museum property. PSO’s work in various locations throughout the Museum including the lobby, control room, loading dock, Mark building, and patrolling.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Acts as the first responder to disruptive persons entering the lobbies and adjacent areas
- Interacts with visitors in a welcoming manner by assisting with wayfinding and providing information related to the Museum collection, public programs, and events
- Safeguard Museum assets, property, equipment, and facilitates against illegal and destructive acts
- Communicate museum policies in a respectful manner using flexibility and discretion. Resolve conflict using de-escalation techniques. Respond and remove visitors who are trespassing or exhibit harassment, discrimination, threatening, disrespectful or hostile behaviors
- Communicating with law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical personnel
- Initiating building evacuations
- Communicates important notification functions via phone, email, radio or Alert Media
- Document activity and write reports in a complete and concise manner
- Issue keys and visitor badges
- Lost and Found management
- Opening and closing the Museum
- Gallery inspections
- Exterior patrols as needed
- Responding to requests for assistance
- Process mail and oversee shipment and deliveries
Secondary or Additional Responsibilities
- Utilize radio for department communications and other technology such as computer, iPad, etc
- Attend ongoing training and learning opportunities
- Maintain confidentiality regarding the Museum’s proprietary information and operations
- Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge & Skills
- Approachable demeanor
- Basic knowledge of security principles
- Prior experience interacting with people suffering from mental illness and or under the influence of drugs/alcohol
- Work collaboratively with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Comfortable dealing with conflict, de-escalation, and confrontation
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Basic operational knowledge of computer including word processing and email
- Adhere to Security dress code and visibly represent the Museum
- Effective problem solving skills
Education, Formal & Informal Experience, Training Required, Certification, Etc.
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education required
- Current Oregon Department of Public Standards Safety Training (DPSST) Unarmed certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
- CPR & AED training certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
- Prior security, law enforcement or military experience preferred but not required
- Familiarity with access control, CCTV and fire systems
Job Conditions
- Non-Exempt/Full-Time Status
- Schedule/Hours: 40 hours per week and scheduled days are currently flexible
- Day Shift: 8:00AM - 4:30PM (The day shift start time can vary depending on the needs)
- Swing Shift: 1:30PM - 10:00PM
- Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and special events
- Overtime as needed
- Works with emergency equipment including first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and AED devices
- Occasionally work outdoors
- Interaction with potentially violent or hostile individuals
- Exposure to blood and bodily fluids due to medical incidents
Physical Activities
- Occasionally lift/push/pull up to 50lbs in emergencies
- Frequently ascends and descends stairs
- Occasionally remains stationary for prolonged periods of time but in an emergency will require rapid movement through the Museum campus
- Occasionally grasping and handling of objects such as pens, computer mouse, and radio
- Frequently talking with colleagues and visitors
- Occasionally operates a computer and other office equipment, such as a phone, i-Pad, and printer
- Frequently listening and communicating to callers on the radio
- This is not a complete representation of all physical requirements
Benefits
- This role is non-exempt/hourly and full-time
- Budgeted compensation is within pay grade C ($15.67 min - $18.02 mid - $20.37 max), depending on experience. Typically fully qualified starts at midpoint.
- Shift differentials, for hourly/non-exempt staff, for hours worked onsite within:
- Evening hours (6:00pm-12:00am) will be paid an additional $1.00 per hour
- Night hours (12:01am-6:00am) will be paid an additional $2.00 per hour
