Job description

Why you should join us:
At Sound Agriculture, we believe our food system can nourish consumers while benefiting farming communities and the planet. Through a deeper understanding of plant and microbial biology, we are leveraging the natural power of plants to make agriculture more agile and resilient. Our work focuses on developing nutrient efficiency products and modernizing plant breeding to improve the way we farm and the food we eat.
Sound is a Series D startup funded by leading investors in food and agriculture including Leaps by Bayer, Syngenta Group Ventures, S2G Ventures, BMO Impact Investment Fund, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Fall Line Capital, Cavallo Ventures, FootPrint Coalition and Northpond Ventures.
What you'll do:

We are hiring a Research Data Engineer to design and deploy the research computing environment we need to accelerate Sound's discovery engine for epigenetic traits and agronomic active ingredients. Our aim is to unleash the power of plants to create a more agile and resilient food system, and we've gotten a great start: our product SOURCE, used on more than 1 million acres, stimulates already-present soil microbes to fix nitrogen so that farmers need less synthetic fertilizer. We are saving grower costs, boosting yield, and making agriculture more sustainable. This role is an exciting opportunity to use powerful information technologies to bring about broad economic and environmental change.
The Research Data Engineer will multiply the effectiveness of our scientific organization, as a combination of hands-on developer and cloud data architect, with authority to innovate and the responsibility to deploy. The Research Data Engineer will design, develop, enhance, maintain, and use data architecture including cloud compute services, knowledge discovery platforms, and advanced experimental automation. We currently work with AWS services, on-site genomic data generation, SaaS LIMS, ML models processing genomic data on custom high performance computing, jupyter notebooks, R, python, and stats/viz packages like JMP. We continually strive toward increasing levels of data automation, abstraction, and democratization. This role will help build what's next.
The Research Data Engineer role reports to the Director of Data Science, will work with our Data Engineering core, and will collaborate closely with teams across the company as a project and team lead. This role is a hybrid onsite position based in our Emeryville, CA headquarters.
Compensation Target
$133,400- $145,000 base salary
10% bonus target
Bonuses are earned based on annual company and individual performance and are prorated based on start date.
Sound reserves the ability to adjust the compensation range based on the final candidate's experience, skillset, and geography. In addition to on target earnings, we offer above average equity grants for the industry as we believe that every employee should have a stake in the company's growth. If you're above this compensation target, we encourage you to reach out and discuss the entire package and opportunity before deciding not to pursue this position.
Responsibilities:

  • Drive development of Sound's core data infrastructure, AWS compute and storage, and the custom on-site GPU cluster – all of which we use to propel ML model building and visualization encompassing petabytes of complex data from hundreds of thousands of samples per year.
  • Build and deploy software tools to provide critical data processing and analysis, and streamlined data access (through ETL, REST services, query systems, and off-the-shelf informatics) for stakeholders across Sound Research including scientists, process engineers, the Molecular Foundry team, and ChemBio and On Demand Breeding platforms.
  • Champion our in-house software and data engineering practice. Mentor data-focused scientists on software methods, tools, workflows, infrastructure, and lifecycle management.
  • Rapidly prototype data capabilities for Research teams to maximize economic and environmental benefits for growers
  • Work to reduce work, by systematically improving the quality and maintainability of Sound's data and data processes.

Targeted Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated software engineering success, both as a direct contributor and project lead
  • Fluency with the data needs of biotech, including automation for molecular biology, genomic data collection and analysis, forward-looking data design, the optimization of discovery pipelines, and democratization of advanced analysis
  • Familiarity with IT capability analysis and build-versus-buy decision making to properly stage both technical debt and delivery of value
  • Excellent full-stack architecture and engineering skills
  • Experience with data lake and warehouse principles and tools, and the use of cloud services to create right-sized data resources to enable efficient ETL work and to support FAIR principles.
  • Deep fluency with python and at least one other scripting language
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with experts at varying levels

The successful Data Engineer embodies our core values of

  • Boldness, by rapidly learning, evaluating, and adopting best-in-class tools, methods, and practice in software development and data stewardship
  • Ownership, by working closely with teams across Sound Research to deliver meaningful data-driven scientific outcomes
  • Respect, by serving as an excellent collaborator across Sound to understand business needs, risks, and opportunities to help us work together better
  • Creativity, by exploring technical and process innovations broadly, even outside our sector, to find and implement the best solutions

#LI-REMOTE

  • Flex Spending Account (Healthcare, Dependent Care & Commuter Benefit)
