Job Duties
- Collect, evaluate and analyze data, document field conditions, and develop recommendations for improvements;
- Prepare sketches and designs using software applications;
- Collect vehicle traffic counts using handheld data collectors and by installing traffic road tubes;
- Compile reports of study findings and prepare technical documents supporting recommended corrective measures and/or improvements;
- Perform plan reviews and provide support for projects;
- Perform Traffic Counts on secondary system to support Traffic Volume Estimates;
- Provide technical support to others relative to studies and
- Maintain traffic count equipment inventory.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in traffic engineering studies, data collection and analysis, or design;
- Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, standards, regulations and practices;
- Knowledge of roadway safety and traffic engineering rules, regulations, specifications and guidelines;
- Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze a variety of technical data and develop findings and recommendations;
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact successfully with co-workers, managers and general public;
- Ability to monitor or inspect work performed by others and provide technical training and guidance.
- Ability to read and interpret road construction plans and to prepare plan sketches and diagrams;
- Ability to work effectively with others on technical issues;
- Skill in the use of computers and software and web-based applications to include MS Office and CADD;
- Ability to lift traffic counters and install road tubes or plates using a hammer or nail gun;
- Ability to work independently to achieve goals and meet deadlines;
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with MUTCD, Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, Highway Capacity Manual and VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications;
- Experience in performing speed studies;
- Proficiency in technical writing

Position is designated to support emergency operations and may be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Fingerprint based

Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has
been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with
the Commonwealth pay bands.
