SESSION EDITOR

The Senate Research Center (SRC), a nonpartisan research office of the Senate of the State of Texas, has an opening for a full-time editor.

This is a full-time, temporary position for the regular session of the 88th Legislature. The term of employment begins on January 2, 2023, and extends for approximately seven months.

The SRC responds to research and information requests from the Lieutenant Governor's Office, members of the Senate, and Senate employees and provides research assistance for Senate committees. During legislative sessions, the SRC prepares analyses of all bills that are considered by the Senate. SRC staff attend Senate committee hearings and meetings of legislative entities and produce summaries of those meetings for members of the Senate and Senate staff. The SRC also publishes research and legislative reports for the Senate and the Lieutenant Governor's Office.

Job Description

SRC editors are responsible for editing and proofreading the bill analyses, summaries, research memoranda, and publications produced by SRC. During legislative sessions, the editors must have the capacity to work long and unpredictable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, while maintaining the highest standards for the documents produced by SRC. The editors must:

• be able to edit for accuracy, clarity, conciseness, readability, grammar, spelling, and

punctuation;

• impose consistent form and style on SRC documents;

• recognize and remedy bias or imbalance in the presentation of ideas;

• proofread and review bill analyses for accuracy and format consistency; and

• work thoroughly and quickly under deadline.

Qualifications

Satisfactory performance on editing, proofreading, and spelling tests.
Editing or proofreading experience is required; legislative experience is helpful.
