Signal Maintainer

NYSW Railway – Deposit, NY

The NYS&W Railway is accepting applications for Signal Maintainer positions at multiple locations on our railroad in New York State. A Signal Maintainer is involved in the construction and maintenance of railroad signal equipment while working alone, or with and under the direction of other Foreman, Inspectors or Signal Maintainers. This job requires outside work, in all weather conditions, with considerable travel in NY, PA and NJ. You will assist in the installation, repair and maintenance of various railroad signals and grade crossing warning device equipment. Preference is given to candidates who have a Commercial Driver’s License, construction experience, electronics/electrical background and/or educational training in electronics.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

· Ensure compliance with all railroad and Federal Railroad Administration rules and regulations for safety, operations

· Construct, Inspect, test, repair and maintain communication/signal and electrical equipment under the guidance of a Foreman, Inspector or Signal Maintainer

· Lubricate moving parts on mechanical equipment such as switch machines, gate motors and circuit controllers

· Repair and paint signal equipment

· When fully qualified, respond to trouble calls during and outside of normal working hours (weekends included)

Pay Rate

Pay rate information is subject to change based on Collective Bargaining Agreement and, if applicable, may vary by location and applicant experience.

Minimum Qualifications

· High School diploma/GED

· 18 years of age or older

· Driver’s License

· Ability in interpreting electrical schematics and construction diagrams

Preferred Qualifications

· Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

· One year outside work experience (construction labor, farming, landscaping, etc.)

· One year experience using Volt / Ohm meters

· One year experience interpreting circuit schematics

· One year training or experience in electronics, electrical, or electromechanical

Basic Competencies

· Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)

· Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)

· Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)

· Mechanical aptitude

Physical Requirements

· Heavy Work, lifting up to 75 pounds

· Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis

· Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection

· Climb ladders and poles up to at least 30 feet to make repairs, tests and installations

· Walking over uneven terrain and getting on and off equipment

Employment Conditions

· Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries

· Wear protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety Shoes, safety glasses, PPE and hard hat.

· Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work

· Requires random testing for drugs and alcohol

· Must pass all required assessments

Safety Commitment

This is a safety sensitive position. The candidate selected for this position must successfully complete a full physical including a drug test and will be subject to Federal Railroad Administration required random drug testing thereafter. Passing results must be received prior to start date in new position. All candidates' safety records will be reviewed and considered when evaluating the candidate pool.
