The Software Engineer is responsible for managing data that is crucial to our applications. This role has the opportunity to directly influence the quality of data and hence the evolution of the public’s access to transportation and transit related real time information systems. The position focuses on data analysis, process improvements, iterative and incremental development and agile practices. With the opportunity to work directly with customers, this role uses the latest in mobile and web technologies to help raise the bar for transportation solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Data Analysis and Validation 45%
- Demonstrates comprehension of underlying dataset
- Researches and understands any updates and their implications
- Executes analysis successfully in a self-guided manner
- Validates outputs against inputs and escalates inconsistencies appropriately
- Takes ownership of any outstanding issues and tracks their progress through to resolution
- Considers end-to-end process after each execution and recommends process improvements
- Executes process improvements upon approval
Software Engineering 45%
- Analyzes requirements to understand technical and business implications
- Designs software to meet today's needs, while providing for likely future needs
- Ruthlessly refactors code for maintainability and to support new features
- Implements designs using best practices and proven design patterns
- Integrates and deploys using automated tools and frameworks
- Tests throughout lifecycle, including unit, integration, story, and acceptance tests
- Provides clear, concise, lightweight documentation as required
- Produces and delivers exceptional quality work that is thorough, polished, and reflects well on CS
- Learns new tools and technologies as appropriate and at an appropriate pace
- Delivers tasks on-time, on-budget, and to the client and Tech Lead’s satisfaction
- Possesses the technical skill necessary to complete assignments effectively and efficiently
- Takes full ownership of all assignments, regardless of task at hand; takes a proactive approach to completing assignments
- Consistently and effectively manages time and workload
- Demonstrates good judgment in determining when to work independently and when to seek assistance
User Experience 5%
- Understands and designs to implementation technology limitations
- Communicates designs effectively via mock-ups, wireframes, sketches and other tools * Participates in UI implementation by developing CSS, HTML5, images and other collateral
Research and Development 5%
- Identifies opportunities to address client requirements through the development of innovative software solutions
- Develops a comprehensive, long term technical vision for software products and platforms * Effectively communicates the capabilities, limitations, and potential value of product platforms to other CS staff
- Actively seeks out and evaluates technologies (new and existing) for potential use on upcoming projects
- Develops functional prototypes to illustrate the potential for new software products, platforms, and technologies
- Advances the commercial viability of software products and platforms through technical innovation and advanced implementation
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related field
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Proficiency with scripting in languages such as Bash and Python
- 1+ years of Java experience
