Job description
The Department of Engineering Education (EED) in the College of Engineering (CoE) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor to start August 15, 2023 (date is flexible). The faculty member hired for this position is expected to contribute to the teaching and research mission of the department.

The faculty member in this position will be expected to:
- Teach courses within the EED, including, but not limited to:
- First and second year undergraduate courses (e.g., the two course Standard sequence (ENGR 1181 and 1182) the two course Honors sequence (ENGR 1281 and 1282), the stand-alone MATLAB course (ENGR 1221)). The classroom includes engineering graphics and the use of computer tools such as EXCEL, MATLAB, C/C++ (Honors only), Word, PowerPoint, and CAD software.
- Graduate courses in engineering education
- Mentor and oversee the activities of the graduate teaching associates (where applicable) and undergraduate teaching assistants who are assigned to their courses
- Participate in student office hours, instructional team meetings, exam grading, curriculum development and implementation, and course preparation
- Disseminate scholarship on educational innovations and assessment of student learning in conference proceedings and peer-reviewed publications
- Serve on various department and college committees
- Establish an independent or collaborative engineering education research program relating to the candidate’s interests
- Represent EED to the general engineering education community
The teaching load will be two courses in each of the academic year semesters. Research responsibilities will include pursuing research grants and collaborating with EED faculty and students. Appropriate service to the department will be identified in alignment with the candidate’s future career goals.
This one-year position is open to candidates along a continuum of career stages, with possible interest for recent PhD graduates, faculty on research leave, and industry professionals seeking to reconnect with teaching and research. Candidates anticipating receiving a PhD in the coming months may apply, but should have their degree in hand at the start of the appointment.

The EED’s mission includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by:
- Contributing to developing world-class scholarship in engineering education
- Modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering
- Developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design, and graduate education in engineering education
The EED was created in November 2015. The EED curriculum is centered around first-year engineering courses, technical communication, multi-disciplinary capstone, other specialized courses and programs, and a doctoral program in engineering education. About 4,000 undergraduate students enroll each year in the first-year engineering courses, about 900 undergraduate students in the technical communications courses, and about 100 undergraduate students in the multidisciplinary capstone courses. In Autumn 2022, approximately 23 graduate students were enrolled in the engineering education doctoral program.
Required Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or design, or another field of study relevant to the discipline of engineering education or relevant to this role
- Evidence of teaching or mentoring teams in engineering
- Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and graphical communication
- Evidence of successful collaboration with others
- Demonstrated experience promoting an organizational climate that values diversity and inclusion
- Demonstrated contributions to the field of engineering education research
