Job title: Garden/Nature Specialist

Classification: Seasonal/non-exempt
Position Summary
This is a seasonal position with the Attleboro YMCA, a leading non-profit organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Nature Specialist is responsible for providing a safe, fun, and educational environment for all campers. They will lead, motivate, and provide a safe camp program which fosters children’s social, spiritual, physical, and intellectual growth. The Nature Specialist will coordinate the delivery of gardening, nature and wildlife education programming.
Essential Job Functions
  • Create and deliver curriculum centered on vegetable gardening, healthy eating, importance of gardening in nature and how it effects the wildlife around it.
  • Must plant vegetables, maintain garden beds, disperse mulch and, keep area tidy.
  • Must prune vegetable plants and pick vegetables when ripe.
  • Curriculum must include teaching campers how to prune plants, pick vegetables, keep the mulch tidy and area clean.
  • Be a consistent role model to the campers and emulate the behavior you want to see in your program area.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized camp space.
  • Maintain positive rapport and open communication with staff, campers, and parents/guardians.
  • Recognize and acknowledge good behavior throughout the day.
  • Promote and participate in all theme activities with enthusiasm.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, nurturing, and engaging environment for campers.
  • Remain attentive to the feelings and emotions of campers and respond or intervene appropriately.
  • Promote the unique talents and diverse abilities of campers by establishing a welcoming environment.
  • Monitor interactions between campers to ensure healthy dialogue and offer guidance on conflict resolution as needed.
  • Create a sense of belonging for campers through shared experiences and teambuilding activities.
  • Attend all mandatory YMCA staff meetings, team meetings and staff trainings.
  • Abide by all camp and YMCA policies & procedures.
  • Actively promote camp and the Attleboro YMCA.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Find coverage if you are unable to work your shift or provide documentation of doctor’s visit.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Prior experience working in landscaping, and gardening
  • Experience working with children 3-16 years of age
  • Must be certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Ability to stay calm and respond effectively in an emergency
  • Quick and effective decision-making skills and strong communication skills
  • A positive, friendly attitude and strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to communicate accurate information in a timely manner
  • A high level of maturity and responsibility
    • Must maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time and in extreme weather conditions
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling and walking
  • Ability to speak concisely and communicate effectively
  • Maintain high-level of physical and mental readiness
