R&D Technical Core Team Leader, Intravascular Ultrasound & Imaging

Provide R&D leadership to develop, gain regulatory approval, and globally commercialize integrated ultrasound systems. This role is responsible for technical multi-disciplinary Leadership in the development, approval, and marketing of this strategically important technology pipeline. The position will have influential responsibility for R&D resources supporting the execution of these programs and portfolio of products.

The person filling this role will lead multidisciplinary, globally dispersed R&D project teams during the execution of a portfolio of products. The product development effort is comprised of complex integration of a minimally invasive catheter delivery system, ultrasound core design, algorithms development, signal & image processing, compute platform, and post-image processing. Key milestones/metrics include regulatory approval in our major markets, adherence to quality objectives, business objectives, and integration of R&D project and resource plans. The person filling this position will drive expectations for technical rigor & design review, technical decisions, program trade-off decisions, stakeholder management, and ensure team commitments to user needs and project scope are met.

Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Formulates and executes long-term plans for platform development investment management.
  • Promotes & programs use of new technologies and industry-leading trends to platform implementation activities.
  • Interacts with a global team as well as external groups (e.g. KOLs) to develop strategic plans encompassing all necessary business elements of the product development plan from VPA to global commercialization.
  • Establishes and communicates critical device performance objectives, monitors progress, assesses technical risk, and implements strategies to ensure successful delivery of the product.
  • Represents consolidated R&D function on integrated Program Core Team.
  • Leads development & integration of R&D workstreams focused on system development of current and next-generation intravascular ultrasound products.
  • Proactively provides input and judgement to influence best path forward, staying informed and aware to act, communicate and adjust during project execution. Partner with PMO to ensure the optimal path forward is supported via technical understanding and data.
  • Leads engineering team to establish program goals, technical specification allocation, key technical milestones, and technical schedules for major programs within the intravascular imaging franchise.
  • Role models critical thinking on the program team: drives problem solving, analytical decision making, embodies a rigorous, data-driven culture.
  • Leads R&D resource planning for the program, coordinates project staffing with R&D functional managers.
  • Communicate key program R&D information to ensure leadership & stakeholder engagement and alignment
  • Monitor and manage team dynamics and health of the R&D project team
  • Develops strong relationships with program leadership, cross-divisional and cross-functional team members to accomplish agreed upon deliverables, timelines, and methodology. Uses facilitative leadership to solicit input from all cross functional members to arrive at the best decisions to reach portfolio milestones.
  • Resolves conflicts and issues goals with product team members, functions, businesses, etc. to ensure successful achievement of goals and timelines.
  • Provides coaching and feedback to team members and their functional managers to keep program moving forward.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline. Examples: Mechanical, Electrical, Software or Biomedical Engineering
  • 15 + years of experience managing R&D activities and teams
  • Experience with engineering of Medical Device Development (including all primary regulations FDA/ISO/PMDA); IEC 60601, IEC 62304, IEC 62366, UL, ANSI and ASTM standards
  • Mastery of product development process
  • A background in ultrasound technologies; an understanding of clinical/technical applications of intravasular products and application related imaging
  • Experienced Core Team Member and technical leader with a track record of successful product launches in the medical device industry
  • Sufficient competency in systems, software/hardware, mechanical, requirements flow down, human factors, reliability, and design controls to ensure best practices are applied, to assess progress and risks, and to make preventive course corrections.
  • Experience leading Design for Six Sigma, Design for Reliability (DfR), Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM), Design for Serviceability, Design for Lean Sigma (DFLS) and/or robust design practices.
